Since then, Japanese companies started to buy and the quantity is growing steadily. At the same time, Burundi has taken a very big step to produce high specialty coffee. It is committed to increase the production from 15000MT a year up to 30000MT by 2022. Among these it is expected to raise specialty coffee by 40%. This will be possible by working together of stakeholders i.e. the government, the World Bank through its coffee project in Burundi of USD 55millions in 6 years, coffee farmers, wet and dry millers. Certification is underway. So far around 40 coffee washing are certified UtZ and Fair trade. Organic certification is still underway. It is expected that by 2022, 50% of coffee washing (280) will have been certified.
It is planned that every year Japanese companies come to visit Burundi either independently or in group. This year 2018, around 15 Japanese buyers visited Burundi. This number will have to grow for sure. Burundi specialty coffee fits very well Japanese coffee market. In fact its flavor is: floral, fruity, brown sugar, honey, vanilla, toasted bread, fresh butter, jasmine etc. whereby the acidity is: arrogant and velvet complex.
