It’s been 22 years since the Specialty Coffee Association (SCAJ) of Japan was established, and this year marks the 20th anniversary of the SCAJ Conference and Exhibition.
The SCAJ was founded in 2003, with the mission of promoting and expanding awareness of specialty coffee in Japan. This establishment followed the global movement of specialty coffee, marked by the founding of various specialty coffee organizations, including the SCAA in the USA in 1982, the SCAE in Europe in 1998, the BSCA in Brazil in 1991, as well as organizations in Costa Rica (1994), Panama (1998), and South Africa (2000).
During the years 2001 and 2002, the international market price of raw materials dropped to an all-time low, a period also referred to as the “Coffee Crisis”. Producers were forced to sell below cost and struggled to afford essential inputs like fertilizers, leading to a decline in coffee quality. Meanwhile, roasters in consumer countries found themselves locked in intense price competition. In the midst of such challenging circumstances, momentum grew to establish a sustainable coffee industry—one that prioritized quality over price, and ensure that consumers could enjoy exceptional delicious coffee at fair and appropriate prices. Within this context, the SCAJ was founded.
This year’s event theme is
This year, the coffee industry is expected to face various challenges.
First and foremost, the market price. In February 2025, Arabica reached a record high of 431 US cents per pound, while Robusta soared to 5,826 US dollars per ton—making the highest international market price for coffee in 47 years.
Followed by the low exchange rate of Japanese currency, and unstable global circumstance, the price of coffee beans, which rely on imports, continues to rise.
Labor shortages, climate change and many other challenges are also issues we must consider. In the coming decade, with the introduction of AI, automation and digitalization, what changes await the coffee industry? Let’s find out together!
The four-day exhibition will bring you the latest insights into the specialty coffee industry, where rapid innovation continues around the world. Let us reaffirm the excellence, attractiveness and diversity of specialty coffee and we hope you make many new discoveries throughout the event.
We are looking forward to welcoming you to the event!
